Excel and Statistics(27), McNemar Test

McNemar Test

Visit http://me2.do/GE2fq9ob. The McNemar Test uses tabular data, similar to chi-square test, but requires that the two numbers are the same. That is, in the form 2×2 or 3×3, etc. So, starting from the upper left corner, the p-value is calculated in red letters below according to the data entered in a square. Specifically, 2×2 shows a continuity corrected p-value. The same is true for chi-square tests: smaller numbers in a cell prefer continuity corrected p values, and larger numbers in cells mean less difference between continuity corrected and uncorrected.

A 2×2 is called the ‘McNemar Test’, and anything larger than that is called the ‘McNemar-Bowker Test’, or just the ‘McNemar Test’.

The McNemar Test can be referred to as a chi-square test for paired data. Earlier we said that the paired t-test is a variant of t-test, and the t-test for paired data is called the paired t-test. Similarly, this case can be called a chi-square test for paired data.

If you did Treat A to John and Treat B to Jane, it could be a t-test or a chi-square test. However, if you did Treatment A and Treatment B to John, it would be a paired t-test or a McNemar Test. Each result is t-test if it is a continuous variable, or McNemar Test if it is a binary variable.

Study Designs such as different treatments for the right and left legs of one person, treatment A, and treatment B after a pause are typical types of research for paired t-tests and McNemar tests.
