Excel and Statistics(2), Name a variable

Excel and Statistics, everybody should know.  : Contents

Name a variable

If you use Excel’s own ‘Data Analysis’ function, it doesn’t matter what you do with the variable names. However, there are some important rules when using Excel as a data collection and organization tool, and when trying to enforce statistics in other programs.

The names of variables are better in English than in Korean (a local language). Some statistical programs recognize local language, but some do not. Most statistical results are presented in tables, and English is preferable because tables must be written in English so that foreigners can read them.

If you only want to do statistical processing in Excel, or if the statistical program you use supports local language very well, you can use local language.

It is recommended that the numbers not come in front of them.

Typing variable names on two lines looks good in Excel and tables, and is commonly used by many researchers and office workers. It is not a problem when performing statistics in Excel itself, but it can be a problem when implemented in other statistical programs, so you need to name the variables in one line. Also, don’t let the numbers come forward, and use the under bar, as shown in the example on the right.
